Network performance data collected during maintenance windows shouldn’t cause you grief with:

  • Erroneous alerts
  • Skewed grouped/higher levels stats
  • Potential questions from customers watching over your shoulder or via their portal access

Maintenance windows allows users to perform recurrent maintenance reviews. You can:

  • Schedule your maintenance windows in advance
  • Only view dashboards based on data collected outside maintenance windows
  • Optionally suppress alert generation for data impacted by a maintenance windows
  • Set recurrent maintenance window reviews (as of 21.06)

Access Maintenance Windows

Look for the following icon in the top right corner of your screen whenever you're using a dashboard, in an analysis session, or looking at performance in the inventory view.

You can toggle it on and off to see the effect of the cleaned data.

When on, the results shown will only be data collected outside of all maintenance windows.

You can also choose to ignore data collected during maintenance windows when defining alert policies.

Provision Maintenance Windows

Maintenance Windows can only be provisioned by administrators, and can only be provisioned in advance of the time period. It does not apply to retroactive periods.

You can use Maintenance Windows to:

  • Schedule a one-off or recurrent maintenance window
  • Use metadata filters to identify the right data to affect

To find this setting, admins must go to Settings ▶ Policies ▶ Maintenance windows

From here, maintenance windows settings can be edited for your system, including recurrent settings.

Add a New Maintenance Window or Access Repeat Maintenance Windows

Repeat Maintenance Windows are available in Analytics releases 21.06 and up.

  1. Click the + Schedule button in the top right corner of the window
  2. This will open a dialog window
  3. Enter the title of the maintenance review
  4. Enter the description
  5. Select Repeat (Weekly) or Do Not repeat from the maintenance window selection.
  6. Select region and enter target data selections and filter information.

Note: Users can edit the dates and time ranges of future policies.

Once saved, the selections will appear in the Maintenance window list and calendar.

Note: The information will not start until the first day after you set it up if the start time has already passed for the current day.

Session Filter Options

You can apply a maintenance window to all or specific session data based on:

  • No filters (all session data)
  • Specific sessions
  • Any metadata values (i.e. region, topology, etc...)

Capture Filter Options

You can apply a maintenance window to specific capture data based on:

  • Application list
  • Capture sensor list
  • Server zone list

Delete Maintenance Windows

Maintenance windows can only be removed if they have not already completed; you cannot retroactively delete policies.
From the ellipsis at the end of the policy definition, select the delete policy option.

How does it work?

  • Early on in the ingestion pipeline, incoming data is compared against the provisioned maintenance windows.
  • If the data records match the metadata or categorical filters of the active windows, they are flagged when stored in the backend.
  • Later in the data pipeline, alerting services can utilize the presence of this flag to optionally ignore records.
  • Query APIs (REST and PVQL) support parameters to ignore data with these flags as well.
  • The user interface provides a toggle in the top right hand corner, which will set these parameters in backend queries for data.
