Managing Reflectors

Reflectors are network devices that are used in performance sessions to reflect the packets in a measurement stream. When you create a performance session, you must select a reflector as part of the session setup.

As a convenience, Skylight orchestrator allows you to maintain a list of devices that can be used as reflectors in performance sessions. When you add a new performance session, you will be able to select a reflector from the system's list of reflector devices.

You can add the following types of device to the list of reflectors displayed in the Devices ▶ Reflectors page:

  • Accedian Skylight elements
  • Accedian Skylight sensor: modules
  • Any device capable of reflecting standard Echo, ETH-OAM (Y.1731 and IEEE802.1ag) or TWAMP sessions
  • Accedian reflector agent integrated into a third-party device.


Note: It is also possible to add a device to the system list of reflectors on the fly when you are adding a new performance session. See "Adding and Editing Performance Sessions".

To view the list of existing reflectors

Select Devices ▶ Reflectors. A list of all reflectors that have already been defined on Skylight orchestrator is displayed.

To add a new reflector or edit an existing reflector

  1. Click the Add Reflector Button_New_Generic.png button (above top left corner of the list) to add a new reflector or double-click an existing reflector to edit its parameters.
    The reflector configuration is displayed to the right of the list of reflectors.

  2. Set the parameters for the reflector.
    For more information on specific parameters, see the table below this procedure.

  3. Click Create and then click Close.

The reflector is saved and displayed in the reflector list. The reflector is available for selection when a new performance session is created.

Reflector parameters (Devices ▶ Reflectors)

ParameterDescription
NameName of the device to be used as a reflector. Read from the device.
LabelUser-defined label. Labels can be used to group devices. You can filter various lists in Skylight orchestrator by including a label in the query.
DescriptionA free-form text that you can use as you wish.
IP addressIP address of the interface to be used as a reflector.
MAC addressMAC address of the interface. Read from the interface.
CapabilitiesIndicates the types of session for which the interface can act as a reflector.

Check all the reflection capabilities that apply to the device.

TWAMP Sessions:

Only check one of the TWAMP options. If you check both options, you will not be able to create the reflector.

  • twamp-rf (stateful TWAMP)
  • twamp-sl-rf (stateless TWAMP)

Echo Sessions:

  • echo-udp-rf
  • echo-icmp-rf

Ethernet OAM Sessions:

  • ethlb-rf
  • ethdm-rf
  • ethvs-rf

To determine the reflection capabilities of third party devices, see the manufacturer’s documentation.

ProductIndicates the product category of the device.

The following options are suitable for Accedian devices:

  • 2xOneWay-RF
  • P1404
  • P2440
  • P2770
  • Skylight sensor: control
  • Skylight sensor: SFP computes (1G or 10G)
  • Skylight sensor: modules (1G or 10G)
  • Skylight elements: LT, LT-S, GT, GX, LX and others

The following options are suitable for third-party devices:

  • HeadEnd
  • Server
  • Host
  • Router
  • Switch
  • RBS (Radio Base Station)

TWAMP control (only enabled if one of the TWAMP options is selected for Capabilities)

ParameterDescription
EnableEnables use of the TWAMP-Control protocol. TWAMP-Control can be used with stateful and stateless reflectors.

For more information about TWAMP sessions and the TWAMP-Control protocol, see "TWAMP Sessions".

IP addressThe IP address of the TWAMP-Control Server. Typically, the TWAMP-Control Server resides on the reflector.

If this field is left blank, TWAMP-Control messages will be sent to the management IP address of the reflector.

If you specify a different IP address for the TWAMP-Control server, the TWAMP-Control messages will be sent to the specified address.

PortThe number of the UDP port to be used on the TWAMP-Control Server for control messages.

The default port is 862.

DSCPSets the traffic classification method to use when transmitting TWAMP-Control messages.

You can use the drop-down list in either of two ways:

VLAN prioritySets the VLAN priority to use when transmitting TWAMP-Control messages.

The default VLAN priority is 0.

Legacy ModeCheck this box if the reflector does not accept current Time-of-Day as the STARTTIME parameter in the TWAMP-Control protocol setup.

To delete a reflector

  1. Select a reflector in the Reflectors list.
  2. Click the Remove reflectors  Button_Remove_Generic.png button (above top left corner of the list).
  3. Click OK in the confirmation dialog to remove the reflector from the list.
