Clearing Unreliable Regulator Statistics

  • PDF

Article summary

The "*" symbol on bandwidth (BW) regulators indicates that the statistics for that regulator are currently unreliable.

This condition can be triggered by:

  • Initial Creation or Reactivation

If a BW regulator is newly created or an inactive bandwidth profile (BWP) is set to active/enabled, the system does not trust the counters until it receives a valid round of statistics from the device.

  • Loss of Connectivity or Session

Any major break in communication between the remote device and the Sensor Control (for example, IP connectivity disruption, session manager marking the device as "unmanaged") will render the statistics unreliable.

  • Sequence Mismatch

The implementation uses a sequence number to track updates from the device. If there is a discrepancy between the "expected sequence" of statistic updates and the "actual sequence" from the device, the statistics are marked unreliable. This may occur, for example, when the device restarts or the tunnel transitions between down/up states.

To clear an unreliable regulator statistic and remove the "*":

  1. Re-establish Communication:

Once a statistic is flagged with "*", the implementation must re-establish communication with the device. The sequence number and counters are analyzed to ensure communication is correctly re-established.

  2. Perform the applicable action:

    • Manual Reset/Clear

A user manually issues a "clear" command on the BW regulator. Assuming communication has been properly re-established at the time the user issues the request, the system will then clear the "*".

    • Automatic Rebase

This applies especially when a BWP is newly activated (case #1 above). Once the system detects the new device flag and valid sequence, it can automatically reset counters internally and remove the asterisk without user intervention. The automatic rebase works for newly activating BWPs; however, if a BWP is disrupted mid-operation, it requires a manual user reset to remove the "*".
