Topology Metadata

Prev Next

A single PM session only shows whether a problem exists between two points. However, when you run PM at scale and overlay topology metadata, you can identify insights about specific network elements without measuring each element directly.

Physical vs. Logical Topology

  • Topology is represented as a comma-separated list of elements. You decide whether to use it for physical paths or logical paths.
  • A logical topology can describe the conceptual path of a session, application transaction flows, or other defined flows based on business rules.
  • Topology does not have to be limited to routers. Hops can be conceptual (for example, an MPLS circuit or a server–client relationship).

Upload Topology Metadata

To correlate element performance across sessions—regardless of an element’s position in the path—define topology as an array:

  • {hop1, hop2, …}.

You can update topology metadata by using the REST APIs or the UI.
