Setting Up a Flow Configuration Job

  • PDF

Article summary

Flowmeter is a high frequency bandwidth utilization meter that is available on the following Accedian products:

  • Skylight element: FSX
  • Skylight element: FS 1G
  • Skylight element: FS 10G
  • Skylight sensor: control

The Flow configuration step can be used to set up flowmeters on all of these products.

Here are some points that you should be aware of when setting up a configuration step for flowmeter on a Skylight sensor: control:

  • A flowmeter is called a port rule. A flowmeter instance is considered a rule and is associated with a port connected to a remote device (Skylight sensor: module or Skylight sensor: SFP compute module).
  • Four flowmeters (port rules) can be associated with a port receiving incoming traffic.
  • A flowmeter does not have a name. Since a flowmeter is a rule associated with a port, its unique identifier is a port rule number (a value from 1 to 4).

Here are some points that you should be aware of when setting up a configuration step for flowmeter on FS and FSX Skylight elements:

  • A flowmeter instance is called a "flow".
  • Flow name is the unique identifier for a flow.
  • Multiple flows can be associated with a port receiving incoming traffic.
  • A metering action can be applied to a flow.

To set up a Flow configuration job

  1. Access the page Commission ▶ Jobs.

  2. Set all common configuration job settings, as described in "Creating Configuration Jobs in GUI Mode" and "Creating Configuration Jobs Using Data Sets".

  3. Select Flow in the left pane. The Flow tab is displayed.

  4. Complete all fields in the Flow tab as required. For more information on parameters, see the table below.

  5. Click Apply, then click Close.

  6. Click the Refresh Button_Refresh_Generic.png button to refresh the user interface.

Flow configuration

ParameterDescription
EnableUse this checkbox to enable or disable the flowmeter instance.
Flow nameThis parameter is only used on the FSX Skylight element. On the FSX, a flowmeter instance is called a flow.

The Flow name is the unique identifier for a flow on the FSX.

Enter a name that contains a maximum of 31 alphanumeric characters.

Note: If the FSX will include both Layer-2 and IPv4 (Layer-3) filters, it is recommended that flow name includes a prefix that indicates the type of filter it uses.

Filter typeSelect the type of filter to be applied to incoming streams:
  • Layer-2 filter
  • IPv4 filter
  • IPv6
  • None
Filter nameEnter the name of a filter that exists on the system on which flowmeter is being configured.
PortThe name that identifies the port.
Port nameEnter the name of a port that exists on the system on which flowmeter is being configured.
Port ruleThis parameter is only used on the Skylight sensor: control.

The port rule number is the unique identifier for a flowmeter on the Skylight sensor: control.

Enter the number of a port rule that exists on the sensor: control on which flowmeter is being configured.

Valid values: 1 to 4

Metering actionThis parameter is only used on the FSX Skylight element.

Select the metering action applied to incoming streams that match the specified filter.

Possible values:

  • None: Used to create a flow that does not perform any metering actions (for example, when creating a flow for future use). No statistics are available for flows if the metering action is set to None.
  • Include: Apply metering to this flow. The flowmeter will collect throughput statistics for the samples from all packets from this flow.
  • Exclude: Do not apply metering to this flow. Packets that match the filter's criteria will be excluded from sampling/collection. Excluded packets will still be included in the flow statistics where the Action Type is Metering.
