Viewing Performance Sessions

Article Summary

This article introduces the Sessions page and explains the information displayed in the list of existing sessions when you open the page.

In the Sessions page, you can:

  • View a list and dashboard of all existing sessions and check their status
  • Filter the list of existing sessions based on various search criteria including user-defined labels
  • View and edit detailed information about a session View the graph associated with a session
  • Export a list of existing sessions to a CSV file Export a specific session to a CSV file
  • Add new sessions Edit existing sessions
  • Delete existing sessions
  • Start and stop existing sessions.


Note: Text summaries have replaced pie charts as of Skylight orchestrator 23.12.

To view the list and dashboard of existing sessions

  1. From the main menu, select Sessions.
    A list of all currently-defined sessions is displayed. Their dashboard is displayed on the bottom of the page, providing you with a high-level statistical view of the sessions. To toggle the dashboard on or off, click GRAPH BUTTON.png above the list.


    Note: This option is unavailable in release 23.12 and later.

  2. Check the Status column to see which sessions are currently running and which are stopped.

  3. To interpret the information displayed for each session, see the table after these procedures.

  4. To display additional columns (or remove columns from the list):

  • Right-click anywhere in the headings at the top of the columns. A context menu is displayed.
  • Slide the cursor down the menu to Columns to view the full list of columns that can be displayed.
  • Check any columns you want to view. Uncheck any columns that you do not want to view.

To filter the list of existing sessions

  1. Access the Sessions page.

  2. Click the Edit filters button (above the list). The Search filters dialog displays.

  3. Complete the fields on which you want to filter the session list.

  4. Click the Apply button. The filtered list of sessions displays.

  5. To clear the filter, click the Clear button (to the right of the search bar).

To view and edit detailed information about a session

You can view details about a session (including live metrics as they are collected) in the Sessions page.

  1. Access the Sessions page.

  2. Click anywhere in the row for the session you want to view.
    Details about the session are displayed to the right of the session list.

    The unit selection in the Sessions detail form (microseconds versus milliseconds) is also applied to the time chart. If you do not see the session details, scroll to the far right.

  3. If the Status of a session is Stopped, you can edit it by selecting the Edit button.
    You can also click on an area containing parameters you want to edit and the area becomes available for editing.

  4. Click the Close button to remove the session details.

To view the graph associated with a session


Note: This option is unavailable in release 23.12 and later.

  1. Access the Sessions page.

  2. Click the row of the session whose graph you want to view.

  3. Above the list, click GRAPH BUTTON.png . The graph displays at the bottom of the page.


Note: For supported session types, select the Round trip tab in session details panel if the Round trip delay checkbox is enabled in Step 3 of Adding, Editing and Duplicating Performance Sessions and update the graph based on new round-trip metrics.

  1. To view a specific point in time, move your cursor over the graph. You can also select a time range by selecting a portion of the graph.

  2. You have the following options:

Refresh the graphClick REFRESH BUTTON.png on the top right of the graph.
View the graph on a full screenClick Arrow BUTTON.png on the top right of the graph.
Pick a time range for the graphClick Time on the top right of the graph.

In the dialogue that displays, select the filter you require.

Apply a previously- defined filter to the graphClick Filters on the top of the graph.

From the drop-down list, select the filter you require.

Create a filter and apply it to the graphClick FUNNEL BUTTON.pngon the top right of the graph.

In the dialog that displays, enter your filter criteria, and then click the Apply button.

Export the statistics of the graph to a CSV fileClick CSV BUTTON.bmp on the top right of the graph.

The file downloads. Save the file using the name and location you require.

To export the list of sessions to a CSV file

  1. Access the Sessions page.

  2. Click EXPORT BUUTTON.png (to the right of the search bar). The file downloads.

  3. Save the file using the name and location you wish.

To export a specific session to a CSV file

  1. Access the Sessions page.

  2. Click the row of the session you want to export.

  3. Click CSV BUTTON.bmp on the top right of the graph.

  4. The file downloads.

  5. Save the file using the name and location you require.

Sessions page – Information displayed for each session

ColumnDescription
NameName of the session.
TypeThe type of session. These are the possible session types (and the layer on which they take place):
  • Echo-ICMP (Layer 3)
  • Echo-UDP (Layer 3)
  • ETH-DM (Layer 2)
  • ETH-LB (Layer 2)
  • ETH-VS (Layer 2)
  • TWAMP (Layer 3)
  • TWAMP-SL (Layer 3)
  • 2xOneWay (Layer 3)
StatusThe current status of the session. The possible values of status are:
  • Stopped – has two possible meanings:
    • The session was created but has not been started.
    • The session was started and stopped.
  • Running – The session is active: packets are being sent.
  • Waiting – The session is between two states
  • Error – The session was running but failed. Detailed information about sessions with errors can be viewed in the system logs. For more information, see the Skylight orchestrator Administration Material.
DescriptionDescription of the session.
StartStart date and time of the session.
StopStop date and time of the session.
LabelsUser-defined labels associated with the session.

Users can associate multiple labels with a session when they create or edit the session.

You can filter the session list by clicking in the search bar (above the list) and entering labels in the search dialog that pops up.

Error messageError message associated to the session.
IntervalThe interval over which packets are collected and for which performance metrics are calculated for the session.

A value in seconds.

SenderThe name of the device that generates the packets for the session, sends them to the reflector and receives them back from the reflector.
Sender interfaceInterface name and IP address sending information.
Sender IPThe identification of the port.
Sender portThe port sending the information.
Sender MACThe MAC address sending the information.
ReflectorThe name of the device that receives packets from the sender and reflects them back.
Reflector interfaceA network device used in performance sessions to reflect the packets in a measurement stream.
Reflector IPThe IP assigned to this reflector.
Reflector portThe port number currently assigned to this reflector. To change the assigned port, enter a new value here, then click Apply.
Reflector MACThe MAC address of the reflector.
MEG levelThe MEG level of the reflector: Frames with the MEG level equal to this setting are reflected. Frames with the MEG level higher than this setting are forwarded. Range: All, 0-7

Note: When All is selected, all frames are reflected.

Packets/sRate at which packets are transmitted for the session.

A value in packets per second.

Round trip delayShows whether Round trip delay is enabled or disabled.
Reflector time subtractionShows whether Reflector time subtraction is enabled or disabled.
Payload sizeThe size of the payload.
TOSType of Service (TOS) for the session.
DSCPDifferentiated Services Code Point.
TTLTTL (Time-To-Live) for the session.
VLAN prioritySets the VLAN priority to use when transmitting TWAMPControl messages. The default VLAN priority is 0.
Sync statusThe status of the synchronization.
Collecting statusThe status of the collection.
Last update timeThe time of the last update to the session.
Last update statusThe status, such as COMPLETED, of the last update.
Last update messageThe message, such as Success, of the last update.
Creation dateThe date the session was created.
PinnedThe option to pin the session is displayed.

Viewing Performance Sessions_5_packets.PNGThe fourth text summary is driven by the current sort column selected. For the example of the text summary shown here, we are sorting the Packets/s (pps) column.

You can filter by clicking on a specific segment of this text summary. This enables you to display only the information, or filter, you want to see.

  • Sender interface
  • Reflector interface

GRAPH BUTTON.pngWhen viewing a list of multiple managed devices, this button toggles the dashboard on and off.

When viewing one specific managed device in the list, this button toggles the graph on and off.
