Setting Up a TWAMP Generator Configuration Job

  • PDF

Article summary

You can set up a configuration job to configure Provider Connectivity Assurance Sensors to generate TWAMP sessions.

To set up a TWAMP Generator configuration job

  1. Access the page Commission ▶ Jobs.

  2. Set all common configuration job settings, as described in "Creating Configuration Jobs in GUI Mode" and "Creating Configuration Jobs Using Data Sets".

  3. Select TWAMP Generator in the left pane. The TWAMP Generator tab is displayed.

  4. Complete all fields for the session (a row in the table) as required. For more information on the parameters in the TWAMP Generator tab, see the table below.

  5. If you want to define more sessions, click the Add PLUS BUTTON.png button, or select a row in the table and click the Duplicate DUPLICATE BUTTON.png button. Complete the fields as required.

  6. Click Apply, then click Close.

  7. Click the Refresh REFRESH BUTTON.png button to refresh the user interface.

General

ParameterDescription
EnableThe state of the TWAMP session. When enabled, TWAMP packets are sent at the specified interval.
Session nameName for the TWAMP session.
IntervalSampling period. A minimum of 10 samples per Reference period is required for minimum/average/maximum calculations.

A value in milliseconds.

Default: 1,000 ms

Reference periodThe reference period for the TWAMP session.

A value in minutes.

Default: 15 minutes

Range: 1 to 1,440 minutes

Note: This value must be at least 10 times the Interval value.

Packet sizeThe size of the TWAMP packet payload. Does not include protocol headers (VLAN tags, UDP, IP, Ethernet) or the four FCS bytes.

A value in bytes.

Default value: 41 bytes

Possible values: 14 to 1,472

Note: If you choose to use a packet size smaller than 41 bytes, you must ensure that the reflector being used supports frame padding, as defined by RFC5357. If you observe that packets are not being reflected, try increasing the packet size to at least 41 bytes.

UDP

ParameterDescription
Destination IPIP address of the TWAMP reflector
Source UDP portUDP port of the source system (the element being configured).
Destination UDP portUDP port of the destination system (the TWAMP reflector).
DSCPDifferentiated Services Code Point class selector.

Default value: 0

Range: 0 to 63

ECNExplicit Congestion Notification.

Default value: 0

Range: 0 to 3

VLAN 1 priorityVLAN 1 priority value. Applies when VLAN 1 encapsulation is enabled. This priority overwrites the PCP value assigned by the VLAN interface, if any.

Default value: 0

Range: 0 to 7

Packet loss

ParameterDescription
Packet loss ratePacket loss is the ratio between the number of packets that were lost during the period and the total number of packets that were sent.

This parameter sets the threshold (expressed as a percentage) at which an Excessive Packet Loss (EPL) alarm is triggered.

A percentage value Default value: 10

Range: 0 to 100

Continuity check thresholdThe number of consecutive sampling periods that can be lost before triggering the Continuity Loss alarm. The alarm status is rounded up to the next full second.

Default value: 10

Range: 2 to 200

Two-way, One-way near-end, One-way far-end (alarm thresholds for two-way and one-way measurements)

ParameterDescription
Maximum delayThe delay allowed for each sample in the Reference period.

This value is used in conjunction with Delay thresh. to trigger an alarm:

  • TWAMP_TW_MAX_DELAY_ALERT

    (for two-way measurements)

  • TWAMP_NE_OW_MAX_DELAY_ALERT

    (for one-way near-end measurements)

  • TWAMP_FE_OW_MAX_DELAY_ALERT

    (for one-way far- end measurements)

A value in milliseconds.

Default value for two-way measurements: 100,000

Default value for one-way measurements: 50,000

Delay thresh.Delay threshold. The number of consecutive samples exceeding the Maximum delay that are allowed before triggering a delay alarm for a Reference period.

Value is a number of samples.

Default value for two-way measurements: 4

Default value for one-way measurements: 4

Avg. delay thresh. The average delay is calculated from samples taken during the reference period.

Exceeding this threshold triggers an alarm:

  • TWAMP_AVG_DELAY_ALERT

    (for two-way measurements)

  • TWAMP_NE_OW_AVG_DELAY_ALERT

    (for one-way near-end measurements)

  • TWAMP_FE_OW_AVG_DELAY_ALERT

    ( for one-way far-end measurements)

A value in milliseconds.

Default value for two-way measurements: 100,000

Default value for one-way measurements: 50,000

Maximum delay variationThe maximum delay variation to monitor during a test period.

This value is used in conjunction with the Delay variation thresh. to trigger an alarm:

  • TWAMP_MAX_DV_ALERT

    (for two-way measurements)

  • TWAMP_NE_OW_MAX_DV_ALERT

    (for one-way near-end measurements)

  • TWAMP_FE_OW_MAX_DV_ALERT

    (for one-way far-end measurements)

A value in milliseconds.

Default value for two-way measurements: 10,000

Default value for one-way measurements: 10,000

Delay variation thresh.Delay variation threshold. The number of consecutive samples exceeding the Maximum delay variation that are allowed before triggering a delay variation alarm for a Reference period.

Value is a number of samples.

Default value for two-way measurements: 4

Default value for one-way measurements: 4

Avg. delay variation thresh. The average two-way delay variation is calculated from samples taken during the reference period. Exceeding this threshold triggers an alarm:
  • TWAMP_AVG_DV_ ALERT

    (for two-way measurements)

  • TWAMP_NE_OW_AVG_DV_ALERT

    (for one-way near-end measurements)

  • TWAMP_FE_OW_AVG_DV_ALERT

    (for one-way far-end measurements)

A value in milliseconds.

Default value for two-way measurements: 10,000

Default value for one-way measurements: 2,000
