About RFC-2544 for Traffic Generation and Analysis
Legacy orchestrator allows you to perform traffic generation and analysis tasks, as specified in the RFC-2544. This section explains how to set up traffic generation and analysis in your Cisco performance monitoring network in order to perform end-to-end testing and monitoring. This type of testing and monitoring makes it possible to pinpoint specific device or network problems, and also to measure current throughput, frame delay and frame-delay variation in individual network segments.
Advanced traffic generation and analysis capabilities allow you to perform fully automated and documented turn-up tests. RFC-2544 test capabilities also include out-of-service tests.
You can use the traffic generator to create a flow of test traffic and produce test results. The traffic generator allows you to set characteristics, such as the traffic type and bit rate, when you define a flow. You can also set the following parameters when setting up a traffic flow:
- Traffic Type: Layer 2 (three types), Layer 3 (two types) or IP multicast traffic
- Test Traffic Encapsulation Type: VLAN or VLAN-in-VLAN
- Frame/Packet Sizes: All sizes defined in the RFC-2544 standard, plus Jumbo
See the RFC-2544 standard for a definition of all parameters and tests.
About the RFC-2544 Page
The RFC-2544 page contains two tabs: Configuration and Results.
The Service Performance ▶ RFC-2544 ▶ Configuration tab lists all tests defined.

Main Tasks in RFC-2544 Testing
The main tasks in using the RFC-2544 capabilities available in Legacy orchestrator are:
- Setting Up an RFC-2544 Test Suite, see "Setting Up an RFC-2544 Test Suite".
- Running an RFC-2544 Test Suite, see "Running an RFC-2544 Test Suite".
- Viewing RFC-2544 Test Results, see "Viewing RFC-2544 Test Results".
