Adding, Editing and Duplicating Performance Sessions

  • PDF

Article summary

This section explains how to set up a new performance session in the Sessions page of Legacy orchestrator. A four-step wizard makes it easy to add (or edit) a session.

The procedures provided in this section apply to all types of sessions. Tables provide detailed information about how to complete the fields in each of the steps. For more information that can help you set up sessions, see:

  • "Guidelines for Setting Up Performance Sessions"
  • "Performance Session Types"
  • "Managing Reflectors" - Explains how to add reflectors in advance in the (Devices ▶ Reflectors page).

It is also possible to set up sessions in bulk (rather than one session at a time in the Sessions page). You can create sessions in bulk in two ways:

  • From the Legacy orchestrator command line (Appliance Monitor). For more information, see Administrative Operations.
  • Using the Legacy orchestrator REST API. For more information, see "Programming Interfaces".

Step 1 - Session info – Description of fields

ColumnDescription
NameName of the session.
LabelsUser-defined labels that will be associated with the session. Legacy orchestrator allows users to associate labels with various entities (sessions, devices and so on). Labels can be used to group entities. You can filter various lists in Legacy orchestrator by including a label in the query. Points to note about user-defined labels:
  • You can enter multiple labels (up to 12).
  • Labels can contain spaces.
  • Press Enter after each label. It will be displayed beside the Label field and you will be able to add another label.
DescriptionEnter a description that indicates the purpose of the session and will help you and others identify the session.
Session typeClick on one of the available session types:
  • Echo-ICMP (Layer 3)
  • Echo-UDP (Layer 3)
  • Ethernet OAM (Layer 2)
  • TWAMP (Layer 3)
  • 2xOneWay (Layer 3).
You will be prompted for more information required for the session in a later step.

Step 2 – Termination points

In Step 2, you select the sender and reflector termination points for the session.

Note: From release 24.09, sessions can be created without a Sender port. Sender port auto-assignment has a range from 14000 to 65535.

a. The image below highlights what you must do in Step 2.
b. For more information about the fields in Step 2, see the table after this procedure.
c. If the device you select as the Reflector is not already in the system list of reflectors (in the Devices ▶ Reflectors page), the Create reflector dialog is displayed.

  • See the image below that highlights what you must do in the Create reflector dialog.
  • For more information, see the table that describes the fields in the Create reflector dialog.
d. If you need to return to Step 1, click on the green ball beside Enter session info.

Step 2 - Termination points – Field descriptions
Sender and Reflector sections include the following parameters

ColumnDescriptioin
NameClick in this field to open the Choose a sender dialog (or the Choose a reflector dialog). The dialog displays a list of devices that are suitable for use as a sender (or reflector).

After you have selected an interface in the dialog, the Name field is filled in with the name read from the device.

The device name cannot be changed from Legacy orchestrator.

The device name can be changed on the device itself. Any changes will be seen on Legacy orchestrator after it synchronizes with the device.

MAC addressNote: The MAC address field is only displayed if you selected Ethernet-OAM in Step 1 (since Ethernet-OAM sessions take place on Layer 2).

After you have selected a device in the Choose a sender or Choose a reflector dialog, the Mac address field is filled in with the MAC address of the interface (read from the device).

InterfaceNote: The Interface field is displayed if you selected one of the Layer 3 session types in Step 1 (Echo-ICMP, Echo-UDP, TWAMP, 2xOneWay).

After you have selected an interface (of a device) in the Choose a sender or Choose a reflector dialog, the Interface field is filled in with the interface you selected.

A logical interface configured on the device. Read from the device.

PortNote: The Port field is only enabled if you selected one of the Layer 3 session types in Step 1 (Echo-UDP, TWAMP, 2xOneWay).

The number of the network port. Typically, the port number depends on the encapsulation used for the session.

To find the port numbers and protocols typically used for each session type, see "Ports and Protocols per Session Type".

If the device you selected is not in the Devices Reflectors list, you must create a reflector. IP address and MAC address are read from the device and cannot be changed. See table for descriptions of fields and how to complete them. When fields are complete, click Create.

Step 2 - Create reflector dialog – Field descriptions

ParameterDescription
NameName of the device to be used as a reflector. Read from the device.

IP addressIP address of the interface to be used as a reflector.
MAC addressMAC address of the interface. Read from the interface.
CapabilitiesIndicates the types of session for which the interface can act as a reflector.

Check all the reflection capabilities that apply to the device.

TWAMP Sessions:

Only check one of the TWAMP options. If you check both options, you will not be able to create the reflector.

  • twamp-rf (stateful TWAMP)

ParameterDescription
EnableEnables use of the TWAMP-Control protocol. TWAMP-Control can be used with stateful and stateless reflectors.

For more information about TWAMP sessions and the TWAMP- Control protocol, see "TWAMP Sessions".

IP addressThe IP address of the TWAMP-Control Server. Typically, the TWAMP- Control Server resides on the reflector.

If this field is left blank, TWAMP-Control messages will be sent to the management IP address of the reflector.

If you specify a different IP address for the TWAMP-Control server, the TWAMP-Control messages will be sent to the specified address.

The default port is 862.

DSCPSets the traffic classification method to use when transmitting TWAMP-Control messages.
VLAN prioritySets the VLAN priority to use when transmitting TWAMP-Control messages.

The default VLAN priority is 0.

Legacy ModeCheck this box if the reflector does not accept current Time-of-Day as the STARTTIME parameter in the TWAMP-Control protocol setup.

Step 3 – Session profile

In Step 3, you configure session parameters.

a. The image below highlights what you must do in this step.
b. For more information about the fields in Step 3, see the table.

  • TWAMP
  • TWAMP-SL
  • ETH-DM
  • ETH-VS
  • 2xOneWay

If enabled or disabled, this flag will be sent to device via XML message when starting a session.

The following performance session types will be supported for Reflector time subtraction:

  • TWAMP
  • TWAMP-SL
  • ETH-DM
  • ETH-VS

Step 4 – Summary

In Step 4, you check the session configuration and actually create the session.
a. The image below highlights what you must do in Step 4.
b. If you need to return to a previous step, click on the green ball beside the step.
c. After you create the session, it is added to the list in the Sessions page. The session is not started automatically. The Status column indicates that the new session is Stopped.
