Skylight orchestrator allows you to manage all the following components of your Accedian performance monitoring solution:

  • Skylight elements (AT, CE, FS, FSX, GT, GX, LT, LX, NE, TE)
  • Skylight sensor: modules (smart SFPs and ANT devices)
  • Skylight License Server
  • Skylight sensor: control
  • Skylight Flex (100 and 25)

By selecting Devices in the left pane, you can access the following pages that allow you to view and manage devices, and to log directly into the devices from Skylight orchestrator:

  • Managed Elements: Displays a list of the devices that Skylight orchestrator is actively managing and can log into automatically. You can include these devices in batch configuration jobs set up on Skylight orchestrator. You can access the user interface of these devices directly from Skylight orchestrator by clicking the IP address of the device in the Managed Elements list. You can add devices to the list and remove them.
  • Unmanaged Elements: Displays a list of devices that Skylight orchestrator is not currently managing.
  • Managed Modules & SFPs: Displays a list of modules connected to Skylight sensor: control devices that Skylight orchestrator is currently managing.
  • Unmanaged Modules & SFPs: Displays a list of modules that Skylight orchestrator is not currently managing.
  • Reflectors: Lists the reflectors that have been defined in Skylight orchestrator.
  • Credentials: Displays a list of credentials (accounts for accessing managed devices) that are currently defined on Skylight orchestrator.
  • Backup & Restore: Displays a list of the most recent configuration backups available on managed devices. Displays the backup creation time, description and auto-activate restore options for managed devices.
  • Firmware: Displays a list of the firmware versions currently installed and running on managed devices. It also indicates the firmware version available for rollback on each managed device.

How Devices Become Managed Elements

Devices enter the inventory of Skylight orchestrator by this general process:

  • Preliminary Step: Set up Credentials.
  • Step 1: Add devices to the Unmanaged list.
  • Step 2: Move unmanaged devices to the Managed list.

Preliminary Step: Set Up Credentials

To manage a device, Skylight orchestrator must be able to log on to the device automatically and transparently to the user. Skylight orchestrator uses Credentials to log on to network devices. One or more credential will have to be set up.

This is a preliminary step, and normally, it is done once, when Skylight orchestrator is initially installed. Occasionally afterwards, it may be necessary to create additional credentials.

For more information, see "Setting Up Devices Credentials".

Step 1: Add Devices to the Unmanaged List

Devices can be added to the Unmanaged list in various ways:

  • They can be added to the Skylight orchestrator system manually by a user in the Unmanaged state. See "Adding, Editing and Deleting Devices Manually" for more information.
  • They can be discovered in a Plug & Go inventory (devices discovered in this way are initially added to the Unmanaged list). See "Setting Up the Discovery Trigger" for more information.
  • They can be imported in the Unmanaged state using an XML import file, see "Adding Devices from a Configuration File".
  • They can be moved from Managed to Unmanaged manually by a user, see "Changing the Management State of a Device".

Step 2: Move Devices from Unmanaged to Managed

In order to manage a device, Skylight orchestrator must be able to log on to the device automatically. Skylight orchestrator uses Credentials to log on to devices. Before being able to move devices from the Unmanaged to the Managed list, one or more Credentials will have to be set up. See "Setting Up Devices Credentials".

This step can be done manually by users in the Unmanaged page. See "Changing the Management State of a Device".

The Discovery Trigger feature makes it possible to discover new devices that were recently installed on the network. The discovered devices are configured and added to the Managed list. See "Discovering Performance Elements".
